Understanding Today’s Lice Challenges
Finding lice on your child’s head can be stressful, but you are not alone, and it is manageable.
Many lice are harder to kill using traditional, pesticide-based lice treatments containing ingredients such as permethrin or pyrethrin. These pesticide-resistant lice are known as super lice. That makes choosing the right treatment more important than ever.
RID® has been a trusted name in lice care for decades. Today, RID® offers multiple solutions designed to fit different family needs, including options for tougher-to-treat super lice.
What Are “Super Lice”?
“Super lice” are head lice that have developed a genetic resistance to traditional pesticide-based treatments over time.
Research has documented resistance mutations in lice populations found in nearly every U.S. state. Super lice look and behave exactly like other lice — they are just harder to kill using traditional lice treatment products.
Visit our checking for lice page for more information on how to detect lice.
Super lice can be frustrating—but with the right product, they are completely treatable.

Treatment Options for Super Lice
When your family is dealing with lice, you want a treatment that is safe, effective, and easy to use-regardless of whether it’s just lice or hard-to-kill super lice. Look for pesticide-free treatments specifically with clinical results against super lice or ivermectin-based products.
RID® offers both of these solutions via RID® SUPER MAX formulas for pesticide-free treatments or RID® One & Done for the latest prescription strength formula that is available over the counter.
Pesticide-Free Treatments
RID® SUPER MAX lice treatment products use clinically tested, pesticide-free formulas that kill even super lice and eggs. This approach works differently from traditional pesticides, so resistance is not a concern. RID® SUPER MAX is safe for use in children 2 years and older.

Ivermectin-Based Treatment
RID® One & Done is the latest FDA-approved prescription to over-the-counter (OTC) switch for lice treatment. Using ivermectin as the active ingredient, it delivers prescription-strength results with a single application and no nit combing required.
The CDC confirms ivermectin is effective in most patients in just one application, without the need for nit combing. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends ivermectin for treating resistant head lice for ages 6 months and older.
RID® One & Done is FDA-approved for children 6 months and older.

What to Expect After Super Lice Treatment
After treating for super lice, it is important to monitor your child’s scalp for confirmation of successful treatment. When checking, keep an eye out for the following:
-
-
- Continue checking your child’s hair for 7 to 10 days after treatment.
-
- If live lice are visible after treatment, follow the directions for your lice treatment to either retreat or contact a health care professional.
- If using RID® One & Done, nits (eggs) may still be present. This treatment kills the lice when they hatch from these eggs, which is why the product is effective without the need for nit combing.
-
Some itching may persist briefly, but this is normal as the scalp settles.
Always be sure to refer to the individual product instructions for clear guidance.
Cleaning the Home and Preventing Reinfestation
According to the AAP, lice spread most often through direct head-to-head contact. This is the primary route in homes and schools.
While less common, spread through furniture, bedding, or shared items can happen. Lice found off the head rarely survive longer than a day away from the scalp.
For families who want added peace of mind, try RID® SUPER MAX Home Spray to treat any non-washable surfaces like furniture or mattresses. RID® SUPER MAX Home Spray is specially formulated to kill resistant super lice, helping your family feel confident from head to home. Just like scalp treatments, other home sprays that use permethrin are less effective on super lice. That’s why RID® SUPER MAX Home Spray is 10x more effective at killing lice than Nix Lice Killing Spray (permethrin 0.25%)*. You can find the RID® SUPER MAX Home Spray in the RID® SUPER MAX 5-in-1 Hair & Home Lice Treatment Kit or sold separately.

When returning to school or camp where lice may still be present, try RID® Daily Defense Shampoo & Conditioner for 24/7* lice defense. This item is included in the RID® SUPER MAX 5-in-1 Treat & Defend Lice Treatment Kit or sold separately. *with daily use

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best lice treatments?
Given the prevalence of super lice, a treatment that kills super lice is an important consideration. Look for lice treatments that are both pesticide-free and clinically tested formulas or ivermectin-based formulas that are the latest approved prescription to over-the-counter lice medicine.
How do lice usually spread?
Lice are most commonly spread through direct head-to-head contact. Sharing hats, combs, or pillows carries a much lower risk. The best prevention is avoiding close head-to-head contact with an affected person.
How common are super lice?
Very common. Resistance has been documented in lice populations across nearly every U.S. state. If treatment with traditional pesticide-based treatment does not seem to be working, resistance may be a factor.
What is the simplest way to treat super lice?
RID® One & Done delivers prescription-strength results in a single application. No second treatment and no combing, making it a highly effective and convenient option for busy families.
How do I check for lice?
Use a fine-tooth lice comb, working in sections from the scalp outward. Focus behind the ears and at the nape of the neck, as they’re the most common spots. Good lighting helps, but you can use a magnifying glass to better see lice.
For a full step-by-step guide, visit RID’s lice-checking resource on our website.
How long should I keep checking after treatment?
Recheck your child’s hair for 7 to 10 days after treatment. This helps catch any newly hatched lice before they can spread further.
Do homeopathic products work on super lice?
Homeopathic lice treatments are required to carry the following disclaimer: “This homeopathic product has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safety or efficacy. FDA is not aware of scientific evidence to support homeopathy as effective.”
