For effective lice treatment, here’s what to look for
Once you have positively identified the presence of head lice (see checking for lice), you can begin to effectively eliminate both lice and eggs (nits) and keep them from returning. For best results, make sure your head lice treatment meets all 4 criteria on our recommended checklist. RID® offers a full line of products that meet these needs.
Lice treatment checklist:
Kills super lice
Not all lice treatments kill super lice. Super lice are lice that have built a genetic resistance to traditional pesticide-based treatments. RID® SUPER MAX lice treatments are pesticide free and kill lice differently, working 100% via lice-suffocating action. They kill even the toughest super lice and eggs (nits).
Kills lice eggs (nits)
Not all lice treatments kill eggs (nits); some rely solely on combing to remove eggs (nits). For the best results, choose a treatment that kills eggs (nits).
Includes a high-quality lice comb
Combing is highly recommended for the best results and to remove dead lice and eggs (nits).
Includes lice defense
After treating hair, lice can remain in your home, school or camp environment.
For ongoing, defense try RID® Daily Defense Shampoo & Conditioner for 24/7 lice defense for return to school or camp. This everyday shampoo and conditioner is included in the RID® SUPER MAX 5-in-1 Treat & Defend Complete Lice Treatment Kit, and is also sold separately.
How to treat lice:
Read all RID® lice treatment instructions on the leaflet inside the box.
Treat
Apply RID® to dry hair, completely saturating hair and scalp. Ensure coverage behind the ears and on the nape of neck. Leave treatment solution or shampoo in hair as directed per the instructions for use.
Wash
RID® is safe and non-toxic but should be used with care to avoid contact with the eyes. Protect eyes with a washcloth or towel. Follow instructions about how to properly wash the product from the hair.
Comb
Use the RID® Lice Comb to remove nits and lice. Part hair into sections and comb one section at a time. Start at the top of head. Place teeth of the comb as close to the scalp as possible and comb away from the scalp to the end of the hair. Use clips to pin back each section of combed hair. Clean comb during use by wiping onto a clean tissue or dry paper towel. Discard tissue or paper towel into a sealable plastic bag and discard the sealed plastic bag.
Check
If using RID® SUPER MAX treatments, check hair after 7 to 10 days. If lice or eggs (nits) are present, repeat steps 1-3. If using RID® Lice Killing Shampoo, it is necessary to repeat steps 1-3 after 7-10 days from initial treatment.
Home control
Wash all affected bedding, hats, clothing, and stuffed animals in hot water, followed by a high-heat drying cycle. For non-washable items such as furniture, carpets, and car seats, use RID® SUPER MAX Home Control Spray to eliminate lice. RID® SUPER MAX Home Control Spray is included in the RID® SUPER MAX 5-in-1 Hair & Home Complete Lice Treatment Kit and is also sold separately.
Defend against new lice
Once lice are eliminated from the hair, the last thing you want is for them to return. To help defend against new lice, use lice treatment products such as RID® SUPER MAX 5-in-1 Treat & Defend Complete Lice Treatment Kit, RID® SUPER MAX 5-in-1 Hair & Home Complete Lice Treatment Kit, or RID® SUPER MAX Advanced Shampoo, which contain lice defense ingredients to help keep new lice away from treated hair for up to 3 days.
For ongoing lice defense upon return to school or camp, use a lice defense shampoo that is safe for everyday use, such as RID® Daily Defense Shampoo & Conditioner, included in RID® SUPER MAX 5-in-1 Treat & Defend Complete Lice Treatment Kit or sold separately.
