The 7-10 Day RID® Lice Elimination Process

Shampoo Dry Hair

If you’re using the RID® Lice Treatment Complete Kit, the first step is to shampoo the hair (see below). If you’re using RID® MAX Complete Lice Removal Kit, there is no shampooing step. So you can skip to Comb Out Lice & Eggs. >

When using RID® Lice Killing Shampoo, proper lice elimination requires two shampooing rounds, with the second shampooing within Days 7-10 to kill any newly hatched lice.

To apply the shampoo, follow the directions on the package, including:

Step 1 – Protect Eyes

Use a towel around the eyes of the person receiving the lice treatment to prevent shampoo from getting into their eyes and to keep their clothes from getting wet.

Step 2 – Apply Shampoo

  • Apply RID Lice Killing Shampoo to dry hair or other affected area. Wetting dilutes the treatment and makes it less effective.
  • For head lice, first apply behind the ears and to the back of the neck. Lice can crawl up and down the hair’s shaft very quickly, so it’s important to apply the treatment from the roots to the ends of the hair.
  • Allow the product to remain on the hair (or other affected area) for 10 minutes, but no longer.

See the Usage Guidelines chart on this page or the product packaging to estimate how much product you will need.

Step 3 – Wash Out

Use warm water to form a lather, shampoo, and then rinse thoroughly. After rinsing, you can follow with regular shampoo if you wish.

Comb Out Lice & Eggs

The key to the RID® MAX Complete Lice Removal Kit is the 100% effective RIDvantage® Lice Comb.

* Combing is also the second step when using the RID® Lice Treatment Complete Kit, but make sure you shampoo first >

There is no shampoo step for RID® MAX Complete.

Combing is a crucial but also tedious step. A good lice comb and a hair detangling aid can significantly reduce combing time and excessive pulling or tearing. While often underestimated, combing time can range between 1 and 8 hours, depending on the length of hair.

Before starting, have on hand:

  • Extra towels
  • Bobby pins or hair clips
  • Facial tissues or paper towels
  • Regular comb for parting and detangling hair

And you may want to find a distraction for your child (e.g., books, T.V., a game).

Step 1 – Comb Out Hair With Regular Wide-Tooth Comb

Comb out hair with a regular wide-tooth comb to take out snarls and tangles.

If using RID MAX Complete Lice Removal Kit, apply RID® MAX Conditioning Solution liberally to dry or wet hair to make combing easier.

If using RID Lice Treatment Complete Kit, section hair and generously apply RID® Lice & Egg Comb-Out Spray as you detangle by section. Do not apply to the entire head at once, since the product dries quickly.

Step 2 – Comb Hair with Lice Comb

Use the patented RIDvantage Lice Comb* that comes with the RID® MAX Complete Lice Removal Kit -or- the RID® Lice Comb that comes with the RID® Lice Treatment Complete Kit.

*The RIDvantage Lice Comb is 100% effective at eliminating lice and super lice, including their eggs, as demonstrated in a laboratory combing study by trained testers.

  • Lift a small section of hair (about 1 to 2 inches wide) and place the comb as close to the scalp as possible. Make sure to start from the roots of the hair (newly laid eggs are found near the hair roots, so it’s important to get the teeth very close to the scalp).
  • Comb in a “scooping” motion away from the head, gently pushing the teeth as close to the hair roots as possible and drag the lice comb firmly from the roots to the ends of the hair. Make sure the teeth are deeply embedded into the strands as you comb through.
  • Wipe eggs and nits from the teeth of the comb with a tissue or paper towel. Discard used tissues and paper towels in a sealable, plastic bag and dispose at the end of the treatment.
  • Pin back the 1 to 2-inch strand you just finished with a bobby pin or hair clip.
  • Repeat this combing process until the entire head has been combed and pinned. Reapply RID Comb-Out Spray or RID MAX Conditioning Solution as needed to keep the hair damp and conditioned.

Step 3 – Rinse Hair

When done, remove all pins or hair clips and rinse the hair thoroughly with warm water. You may also wash with regular shampoo.

When using the RID Lice Treatment Complete Kit: if you see eggs or live lice before Day Seven, comb out lice & eggs again. But it’s unnecessary to comb between shampooings, as these lice are not mature enough to lay eggs and will be eliminated when you shampoo again in 7 to 10 days.

Treat the Home

Whether you’re using the RID® MAX Complete Lice Removal Kit or the RID® Lice Treatment Complete Kit, the final step is to treat your home.

To help reduce the likelihood of lice spreading or coming back, take steps to kill lice and their eggs on linens, toys, mattresses, furniture, car interiors, and other non-washable items.

  • Disinfect hats, hair ribbons, scarves, coats, towels, and bed linens by machine washing in hot water [above 54°C (130°F)], then using the hottest dryer cycle for at least 20 minutes.
  • For items that can’t be washed (bedspreads, blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, etc.), dry-clean or seal them in a plastic bag for four weeks, then remove them and shake them very hard outdoors before using again.
  • Vacuum all carpets, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and car seats that may have been used by affected people.
  • Soak all combs and brushes, including the RID® Lice Comb, in hot water [above 54°C (130°F)] for at least 10 minutes
  • Use RID® Home Lice, Bedbug & Dust Mite Spray on items that can’t be washed, dry-cleaned, or stored.
